Process for IKEA workers

We know this is a big step for you, and that you want to know what's going to happen in each stage of the drive. So, here's a quick look at the process involved, showing the steps you'll be taking and those that Teamsters 213 will be following on your behalf:

Teamsters 213 Role

Your Role

STEP 1 Answering your questions. Ask all the questions you wish to, and then make a decision.
STEP 2 Over the next little while, we'll begin collecting cards from people who have decided that joining Teamsters 213 is in their best interest. What are these cards? Well, very simply, they are confidential Application for Membership cards, and they indicate your interest in joining Teamsters 213. When you feel ready, you can use our Sign a Card page to fill in the card.

STEP 3

Here is what happens after signing and submitting your card:

  • The cards will be collected by Teamsters 213, double-checked by our lawyers, and presented to the BC Labour Relations Board (LRB) as proof of support, before being returned to our lawyer's office.
  • They will never go to your employer; management never sees them OR a list of who signed them.

STEP 4 We need to show the LRB that there are enough of you interested in joining. The percentage it asks for is a minimum of 45% - we like to have more though so we know we have really good support in moving forward. If we have that, we make a formal application for certification to the LRB.
STEP 5 At this point, the LRB will notify your employer about the application - but your employer will never know who signed a card.
STEP 6 Next up is a hearing at the LRB to ensure the requirements have been met - a date for you to vote is scheduled.
STEP 7 The LRB will send a notice and copy of a sample ballot to your employer who must post it in an open place like your lunchroom, so that all employees are aware of the upcoming vote.
STEP 8   Vote time! Usually within 10 days of the LRB notifying the employer. You'll be voting at your workplace. And it's the LRB - not us or your employer - who will carry out the vote. It is a secret ballot, just like in a government election, and no one will ever know how you voted.
STEP 9 If there are no challenges by your employer or Teamsters 213, then the ballot box will be opened by the LRB officer, and the votes counted. And majority rules - 50% plus 1 wins the vote.
